The American Watercolor Society was founded in 1866, the same year Venice became part of Italy. What a lovely marriage of birthdays. One extraordinary city encompassed by water and the American Watercolor Society, dedicated to the art of watercolor. Over these 140 years, there have been paeans of praises regarding both. The society boasts such prominent members as Edward Austin Abbey, Morris Graves, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Ted Dautzkey, John LaFarge, Mario Cooper, Sir William Russell Flint, Chen Chi, Dong Kingman, and Andrew Wyeth.
