UNITED WE CREATE

United We Create is a community-driven public art initiative that brings together youth, families, and residents in a collaborative creative process exploring shared histories, civic values, and collective visions for the future.

Through storytelling workshops, local history research, and hands-on design sessions, participants work alongside a lead artist to shape a mural that reflects both national themes and Freeport’s unique sense of place. Rooted in connection and creativity, the project invites community voices to help tell a broader American story - one that is inclusive, reflective, and forward-looking.

The completed mural will be unveiled during a public celebration, Freedom on the Rocks: A Celebration of United We Create, on September 12, 2026.

LEAD ARTIST

The Freeport Art Museum has selected Ben Swords as Lead Artist for United We Create, a community mural project commemorating the United States’ 250th anniversary. The large-scale mural, to be installed on the museum’s Arts Plaza, will be created through a collaborative process that brings together youth, families, and community members to explore shared histories, civic values, and collective visions for the future.

A lifelong Freeport resident, Swords brings both artistic expertise and deep community ties to the project. He holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Webster University and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education Visual Arts from Liberty University. He currently serves as an educator in the Freeport School District, where he works closely with students to develop creative skills and confidence.

As Lead Artist, Swords will collaborate with museum staff and community partners to facilitate storytelling workshops, lead public art sessions, and develop a final mural design informed by local history and community input. Drawing on both his artistic practice and his commitment to the community that shaped him, he will guide an inclusive process that ensures the mural reflects the voices and experiences of Freeport residents.

UPCOMING EVENTS

WEDNESDAY - MAY 20TH

FREEPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY

Join the Freeport Art Museum and the Stephenson County Historical Society for a special lecture exploring the people who shaped Freeport—from its earliest settlers to the workers, families, and community members whose daily efforts built and sustained the city over time.

While highlighting key figures in Freeport’s growth, this conversation also shines a light on the often-overlooked stories of factory workers, small business employees, and everyday individuals whose contributions are just as vital to our shared history.

Guests are encouraged to bring and share stories of their own families, workplaces, and experiences. Together, we’ll celebrate the idea that it takes many hands to build a community - and that every story matters.
